This area of the contests are dedicated to the written arts. Here you will find contests relating to essays, poems, and the like.

Guidelines

Many of the writing contests will have a set of guidelines attatched to the prompt. Please make sure to take a close look as the guidelines as not following them and the requirements may result in being disqualified from the contest.

Most writing prompts will ask for a certain word count, correct grammar and punctuation.

2022 GANDHI/KING PEACE SCHOLARSHIP

Writing Prompt:

Both Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., advocated for nonviolence as the way to confront the hate and discrimination that so often accompanies the disrespect of other human beings. The work and words of Gandhi and King are both an example and a road map for the way forward for our country. As a community college student, outline a plan that will educate the members of your college community about the scope of the problem and the elements of and rationale for a nonviolent response. In the description of your plan, draw on the lives and writings of Gandhi and King.

• Requirements: Participants must address the Writing Prompt described above. Each submission must be no longer than 500 words in length, typed single-spaced in business-letter format.
• Criteria:
  • Demonstrated understanding of the significance of the work of Gandhi and King
  • Content, strength and persuasiveness of argument
  • Personal goals and involvement in peacebuilding efforts
  • Writing style, clarity of expression, and correct grammar and punctuation
• Prize: 1^st - $100 and submission to statewide competition for a $1,000 scholarship; 2^nd - $50; 3^rd - $25.

Entries should be emailed to marketing@students.dacc.edu on or before 5 pm, Monday, February 14. Winners will be announced Monday, Feb. 28. Entries must include full name, and email address and phone number where you can be reached.

2022 PAUL SIMON STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST

Writing Prompt:

How My Community College Has Changed My Life.

• Requirements: essay must be brief (less than 500 words), typed, and address the theme "How My Community College Has Changed My Life."
• Prizes: 1^st - $100 and submission to statewide competition for a $1,000 scholarship; 2^nd - $50; 3^rd - $25.
