An introductory study of the techniques of story writing and storytelling with representative samples and readings.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify aspects of voice and storytelling craft in his or her fiction and analyze their effectiveness.
- Craft a critique of his or her work.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply feedback when revising their works.
- Demonstrate a growing understanding of their writing process.
- Execute the process of submitting a story to Waiting for Rain.
- Demonstrate an understanding role of local writing communities in the development of writers.
- Demonstrate the ability to analyze the craft of fiction writing in the works of other writers.

Students will be evaluated through the following methods:
- Students will complete a series writing journal entries during the first six weeks of class.
- Students will attend literary events at the Pygmalion Festival in Champaign. They will write a brief critical essay about the events that they attended.
- Students will complete a series of discussion posts and responses in relation to the assigned readings from the text.
- Students will submit a rough draft of their extended creative writing projects as well as a final draft of them and a self-assessment in portfolio form.
- Students must have two face-to-face meetings with the instructor about their writing/portfolio work.
- Students will submit a rough draft and final draft of their portfolio. The final draft should show substantial revision from what is submitted for the rough draft.
- Students will choose at least one flash fiction and one short fiction (not fan fiction) piece from their portfolio for submission to Waiting for Rain, the college’s literary anthology.
- As their final, students will write a short critical essay of one of the stories from The Best American Short Stories, 2016. In the essay, they will provide a detailed analysis of how the theories concerning the craft of fiction discussed in the Gardner text have been applied by the author of the story they have chosen to analyze.
