Department of Human Services TANF

DHS was created on July 1, 1997, when three human service agencies and parts of three others were consolidated into one agency.  This merger brought Illinois’ human service programs under one roof and ensured the people of Illinois access to a wide variety of coordinated programs.  At the same time, the merger saved the taxpayers of Illinois more than $1.3 million in redirected administrative costs.

Programs facilitated by the DHS are:

  • Alcoholism and substance abuse
  • Child care
  • Community health and prevention
  • Aid to the aged, blind or disabled (AABD)
  • Human Capital Development
  • Developmental disabilities
  • Food stamps
  • Illinois LINK (Food Stamps)
  • TANF
