Emergency Text
Message Alerts
DACC offers an Emergency Text Messaging
Alert System to students,
faculty, and
staff to be used in the event of a potential, developing, or existing
on-campus
emergency, or advisories about closings and/or class cancellations,
possibly
due to inclement weather. There is no charge for signing up; however,
standard
text messaging rates from your cell phone service provider will apply.
Emergency Text Messaging is just one of the methods DACC will use to
communicate emergency information to students, faculty, and staff. We
will
continue to use a variety of other methods as appropriate, including
email and
posting on the DACC website.
To sign up to receive
emergency text messages on your cell
phone, please go to www.dacc.edu/currentstudents
(employees will find
the information at www.dacc.edu/employees).
You
will
need
your
DACC
student ID and password, or employee username and password. You
will be
asked for your cell phone number and for your permission to add that
number to
the system. Important! You will be asked for a password. That password
will
allow you to manage your text-messaging account. Do not use the same
password
that you use for your DACC account.
Please
Note: ALL students, faculty, and staff are cleared out of the
emergency
text message system each August. This is to delete students,
faculty, and
staff who are no longer associated with DACC. If you previously
signed up
for emergency text messaging, and you wish to continue to participate,
you MUST
sign up again
DACC Emergency Class
Canellation/Closing Procedure
In the
event of an emergency or severe weather conditions,
every attempt will be made to post cancellation/closing announcements
to the
DACC website (http://www.dacc.edu), DACC employee and student email
accounts,
the DACC main switchboard (217-443-3222), and the Emergency Text
Message Alert
System**. These are the official communication
channels utilized by Danville Area
Community College to inform employees and students.
While
the College works diligently with local broadcast media
to provide accurate and timely information, there exists a possibility
for
miscommunication or delay via third party. Notice will be given to
select area
broadcast media (noted below*) and will be posted on the
College-managed
FaceBook (Danville Area Community College and/or Dacc Danville) and
Twitter
(@DanvilleAreaCC) pages; however, none of these are official College
communication channels. Messages received through these media should be
confirmed
via the official communication channels listed above.
In the
event that conditions are such that classes are
cancelled, but College business will still be conducted, an
announcement will
be posted that, “Classes are CANCELLED, but DACC is OPEN; staff and
administrators please report.”
Should
conditions change during the school day so that
“classes are CANCELLED, but DACC is OPEN,” students may leave but staff
and
administrators should remain to allow College offices to conduct
regular
business.
In the
event of an emergency or severe weather conditions
resulting in a facility closure, an announcement will be posted that,
“DACC is
CLOSED” and students and employees need not report to campus. In the
event that “DACC is
CLOSED” after the school day begins, all students and employees may go
home.
**Please
note that users must enroll with the text message
alert system each August (see above):
https://mail.dacc.edu/alerts/
(for employees)
https://intra.dacc.edu/students/alerts-signup/index.php
(for
students)

Society
(WYSE). Participants are tested in seven
different academic areas including mathematics, physics, chemistry,

DACC Hosts Annual Eagle Day
Public Encouraged to Attend
Danville
Area Community College is going to the
birds. DACC will host a program presented by the Office of Wildlife
Learning
World Bird Sanctuary of St. Louis. This annual event will be held
in the Mary
Miller Gymnasium
on the campus of Danville Area Community College on Wednesday,

demonstrate the inherent grace and agility of the display birds. Each
year, the
highlight of the event is the appearance of our national symbol, the
Bald
Eagle. This interesting and informative program is
free of charge and should appeal to people of all ages. All area 4th

graders attend the event annually. The public is encouraged to

Questions you may
have regarding tobacco free campus
DACC is committed to providing its staff and students with a safe and
healthy
environment. As you are aware, DACC has developed a task force
comprised
of both staff and students to explore a "tobacco free campus"
initiative. Reasons we are moving toward a tobacco-free campus include:
1. The exposure to second-hand smoke at
building
entrances and exits
2. The desire to ensure clean air for all
who
come to campus
3. The presence of underage students on
campus
4. Tobacco litter throughout campus
grounds
Below are some questions you may have regarding this process; this
information
can also be found on the DACC home page at www.dacc.edu.
I
invite
you
to
read
the
information and direct any questions you may
have at tobaccofree@dacc.edu.
What does “Tobacco-free mean?”
“Tobacco free” means that DACC would be completely free from tobacco
products. No consumption of tobacco or tobacco products would be
allowed
on any college property or in any college facility. “Tobacco” is
defined
to include any lighted or unlighted cigarette, cigar, pipe, bidi, clove
cigarette, and any other smoking products or products that appear to be
a
cigarette. This also includes smokeless or spit tobacco, also
known as
dip, chew, snuff or snus, in any form.
Isn’t it my right to use tobacco?
Tobacco is a legal product that can be purchased and possessed at the
discretion of any adult; however, the use of tobacco is subject to
restrictions. This is evidenced by the numerous public
restrictions on
the use of tobacco, which have been put into place by state laws as
well as by
businesses and organizations throughout the state and the nation.
DACC is
not taking away anyone’s right to smoke or purchase and/or possess
tobacco. However, one of our institutional goals is to create an
environment for our students, staff and visitors that is safe and
healthy. Therefore, out of respect for others and the
environment, we are
moving towards adopting a policy states that the use of tobacco
products is
prohibited on DACC campus.
Why can’t the state law which states those using tobacco
products must stay
at least 15 feet away from all entrances be better enforced instead? Or
why not
have designated smoking areas instead?
The 2006 US Surgeon General’s Report, “The Health Consequences of
Involuntary
Exposure to Tobacco Smoke,” has concluded that exposure to secondhand
smoke has
immediate adverse effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory
systems,
and that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand
smoke. In
addition, according to the World Health Organization, there is no safe
level of
secondhand smoke and the only effective way to protect others is to
establish
100% smoke free environments. Because of these findings, and
because
there is no way to prevent exposure to second hand smoke when using
designated
areas, DACC is moving towards adopting a policy that states that the
use of
tobacco products is prohibited on DACC campus.

Change
in Disability Testing Service
This spring the Student Success Center is changing how some services
are
delivered to students. All services related to extended time for
testing
and testing in a non distracting environment will be delivered in the
Assessment Center. Students will no longer go to the
Student
Success Center to take tests. Setting up testing for
students with
disabilities will follow the Assessment Center procedures.
Used
Battery Recycling
In an effort to reduce landfill waste and help the environment, we have
begun
to recycle used batteries. We are placing a blue recycle container
labeled
"Used Batteries" in every campus building. Please deposit your
used batteries in these containers. We ask that you do not place
motorcycle or car batteries in these containers. Let's all do our
part to
help the environment.
Plastic
Bottle Recycling
We now have a source to recycle plastic drink bottles. Blue
recycle
containers designated for PLASTIC BOTTLES ONLY are located throughout
the
campus. Please deposit your plastic bottles in these containers.
Students
with Disabilities
DACC offers an inclusive campus climate that is promoted by fostering
an
understanding of the effects of disabilities and by working to
eliminate the
physical, technical, and attitudinal barriers that limit the range of
opportunities for students with disabilities. Requests for
accommodations are
made to Vicky Welge, Director, Student Success Services(SSC). Vicky
Welge may
be contacted by phone at 443-8702 or email at vwelge@dacc.edu.
