Nursing Admission Criteria

  1. Applicants must meet all admission criteria for Danville Area Community College and must have an official high school transcript or GED.

    Admission Process:
     

    1. Complete the application to Danville Area Community College.Nursing Image
       
    2. Complete the School of Nursing application required for entry into the program from the School of Nursing office (Mary Miller Office 172).  Please contact the School of Nursing for application deadlines.

       

  2. College Assessment:

    Applicants must complete the College placement testing in math and complete the necessary course work prior to admission. This testing may be math scores from ACT, SAT, or the Asset/Compass Test, which is a free test given on Campus. To register for this free testing, call the Assessment Center at 217.443.8708. Since math/logic skills are utilized extensively in the nursing program and profession, current ability must be verified. All nursing students must be at the following level of math prior to admission.

    ►Successful completion of Math 101 (Basic Algebra) or higher level algebra-based math course within five (5) years of the desired admission date.

    OR

    ►Placement into Math 105 (Intermediate Algebra) or higher level algebra-based math course by placement testing within three (3) years of the desired admission date.
     

    1. Applicants placing in courses below the required levels will need to complete the courses indicated above with a "C" or better before being eligible for the program. Developmental courses are not counted in the College cumulative grade point average, although these grades may be used to rank order nursing applicants for admission.
       
  3. General Education Requirements
     
    1. Students who have successfully completed BIOL 136 & 137 on the FIRST attempt will be given priority consideration for admission into the program.
    2. Those students who meet requirement A, and have successfully completed all program general education courses will have priority consideration for admission into the program.

      General Education Courses:
      SPCH 101 - Oral Communications (Public Speaking not interchangeable)
      PSYC 100 - Introduction to Psychology
      ENGL 101 - Rhetoric I
      BIOL 136 - Anatomy & Physiology I*
      BIOL 137 - Anatomy & Physiology II
      BIOL 140 - Microbiology*
      One Humanities Elective - must choose only IAI approved Humanities or Fine Arts Course
      * Pre-requisite required: BIOL 102 or appropriate score on Biology Placement Test.*
      Recommended Courses:      HLTH 102 - First Aid and Personal Safety
                                                   BOFF 140 - Medical Terminology 

    3. Applicants will be rank-ordered according to grade point averages in the required general education courses
    4. Required science courses must be taken within five (5) years of the desired admission date.
    5. All required general education courses must be passed with a "C" or better.
  4. Residency
     
    1. Applicants who are legal residents of Community College District 507 will be given priority for admission provided all admission criteria are met. This is contingent on the completion of general education courses as stated above.
    2. Applicants who are residents of the Indiana "7-county" special tuition area will be considered next for admission provided all admission criteria are met.
    3. Non-residents of District 507 will be considered for admission after all qualified and eligible in-district and Indiana "7-county" applicants have been offered admission.
    4. Official definition of residence and description of District 507 boundaries are available in the Registration and Student Services offices.
  5. Additional requirements for Level II ADN Applicants
     
    1. Students who have completed Level I are strongly encouraged to complete the NCLEX-PN (State Board Exam for licensure) before the beginning of Level II.
    2. LPNs who graduated from an approved practical nursing program must have documentation of 1040 hours of work experience as an LPN in the past two years and must have a current and valid LPN license that has never been disciplined
    3. The Level II graduate must meet Constitution requirement for Associate Degree.

  6. Drug screening is done annually. Any student will a positive drug screen will be considered ineligible for the program. Consideration for readmission or any admission after a positive drug test will require three negative screens after one (1) year of application. Testing is at the student's expense. Current immunization status must be completed prior to the first day of classes. A physician’s exam must also be completed indicating the applicant meets the technical requirements of the nursing program regarding physical, emotional, and mental skills and abilities, or that reasonable accommodations will be requested. In addition, students must submit documentation of current American Heart Healthcare Provider CPR certification and maintain such certification throughout the Program.
     

  7. Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of the Program, and must therefore, meet the Technical Requirements of the Program.
     

  8. Students must adhere to DACC's drug free policy and must meet criteria of each clinical site utilized by the Program.  Being under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or any other behavior altering substance during class/clinical/lab instruction is grounds for immediate dismissal from the nursing program. If an instructor suspects a student is under the influence, the instructor has the right to request a drug screen at the student's expense.
     

  9. Applicants accepted into the Program must respond with an acceptance or declination letter by the date specified on the acceptance letter. No response or a late response will be considered a declination, and the seat will be offered to the next qualified applicant.
     

  10. If all seats are filled for the current year, remaining qualified applicants must submit another application the following year. Applications and waiting lists of qualified applicants will not be maintained from year to year.
  11. Students considering application to the program need to be aware of criminal background checks and potential legal limitations on licensure.
