DACC Hosts Family Science Night
“Science is best learned hands-on,” says Dr. Wendy Brown, Microbiology Instructor at Danville Area Community College. “Younger children need to be exposed to the fun side of science before they lose the ability to be “wowed” by it.”

With this purpose in mind, Dr. Brown initiated the first Family Science Night at DACC eight years ago. The free event, scheduled every other year, will be held for the fifth time on Friday, November 4,  from 5:30-8:00 pm in Mary Miller Gymnasium. Dr. Brown’s colleagues in the Math and Science division, along with a host volunteers comprised of DACC students, faculty, and staff, will assist her in engaging area grade school children and their parents with 50 different interactive science stations. While anyone may attend, most activities are geared toward children in grades K-5. More than 500 children and their families have attended each of the previous events.

Planned activities include exploring erosion, experimenting with sound, examining wind technology, investigating worm reflexes, and "Lizards, Snakes and Turtles, OH MY" which features DACC Science Division’s cold blooded residents. At many stations, children will make and take home creations like slime or a straw rocket.

Family Science Night is FREE and open to the public.

Spring 2012 Registration Dates at DACC
Registration for Winter Term 2011 and Spring 2012 will begin soon at Danville Area Community College. New students, and current students who prefer to register with an academic advisor, may begin registering on Monday, November 7, 2011; the Counseling and Advising office will begin making appointments for these students on October 17. Current students who have filed an education plan with the Counseling and Advising office may begin registering online October 31, 2011. Online registration is not available to new students. The registration deadline for students who will be new to DACC in the spring semester is Friday, January 6, 2012. Students who wish to register themselves online, but have not filed an educational plan are encouraged to meet with a counselor or academic advisor as soon as possible.

Winter Term is December 19, 2011 through January 6, 2012. All Winter Term courses are offered only online. Most spring classes begin January 17, 2012.

Due to the record enrollment of the past several semesters, current and new students are encouraged to enroll early for the best choice of class schedules. Hours for Counseling and Academic Advising are 8AM-5PM Monday through Friday. All College offices will be closed November 11, 2011 in observance of Veterans Day; November 24 and 25, 2011 for the Thanksgiving Holiday; and December 26, 2011, through January 2, 2012, for Winter break. Extended hours of 8AM-5:30PM will be offered Monday through Thursday, January 9-12 and Tuesday, January 17, 2012.

In the spirit of “going green,” DACC implemented a paperless student communication system beginning with fall 2010 grades, and then added billing statements in spring 2011. The College no longer mails student grade reports or semester billing statements; students must access their personal information online through the Jaguar Spot via the DACC website. Current and prospective students who do not have Internet access may use computers available on campus.

To schedule a counseling appointment for the purpose of making an education plan or registering for spring 2012, or for questions about information accessed via the Jaguar Spot, please contact the Counseling and Advising office at 217-443-8750.

Fall 2011 Play
The Liberal Arts Division of Danville Area Community College and the DACC Theater students will host performances of Sense and Sensibility on Friday, November 18 and Saturday November 19, at 7:00 PM in the Bremer Theater at DACC.

Upon the death of their father, sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood find themselves in reduced circumstances and captivated by two very different men in this lively and dynamic adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel. A lack of family fortune means a dearth of marriage prospects for the sisters, yet sensible Elinor is charmed by the quiet, bumbling goodness of Edward, while passionate Marianne is swept off of her feet by the dashing and mysterious Willoughby. Startling secrets and unexpected twists line the path to true love in this tale of flirtation and folly. When Willoughby’s scandalous past and Edward’s secret fiancee come to light, the sisters are forced to rely upon themselves and one another to weather their heartache -- and learn that when sense and sensibility meet, love can’t be far behind.

Sense and Sensibility is the latest in a string of hits for DACC’s Theater program, under the direction of Glenda Boling. Mrs. Boling was selected as the national William H. Meardy Outstanding Faculty Member by the Association of Community College Trustees in 2007. Her revival of the DACC Theater program, and its subsequent success, was one of the positive innovations that figured into her selection as a national winner. Phillip Langley, Lead Instructor in Developmental Education, is her co-director on this and many other DACC productions.

The student cast includes Jacob Ault, Quentin Bloodworth, Aubrey Falconio, Ryan Harden, Lauren Hous, Dustin Jones, Amanda Long, Katheryne Mallender, Clive McLaughlin, Richard Morgan, Anree Pierce, Jonathan Claver, Breely Arford, Grace Oliver, and Katie Walter. Ryan Perez is the student director.

For more information about this or other student productions at DACC, please contact Liberal Arts instructor Glenda Boling at (217) 443-8526, or gboling@dacc.edu. For more information about special events at DACC, please log onto www.dacc.edu and check out the Events Calendar on the home page.

Danville Area Community College Foundation’s annual Honors Program celebrates the achievements of scholarship recipients at DACC and the generosity of the donors who support them. Without the support of scholarship dollars, many students’ potential might remain untapped.

DACC Foundation Awards Record Number of Scholarships
On Friday, September 30, 2011, the DACC Foundation celebrated awarding a record-breaking 275 scholarships valued at more than $260,000 during the annual Honors program. More than 300 people gathered in Mary Miller Gym to honor the motivation and dedication of scholarship recipients while thanking the generous donors who made the scholarships possible. It was a rewarding experience for everyone.

Scholarship dollars often make the difference between students achieving their dreams or putting them on hold indefinitely. These valuable scholarships assist students in reaching their education goals. Awards are given to both traditional and non-traditional students.

Scholarship applications will be available in the DACC Foundation office and online at www.dacc.edu/foundation beginning in mid-December for the 2012-2013 school year. Applications are due back to the Foundation office by February 29, 2012.

Anyone wishing to receive additional information about sponsoring a scholarship or about completing a scholarship application may contact the DACC Foundation at 217-443-8843.
