Registration for Danville Area Community College's College for Kids program begins in May of 2005.
College for Kids is designed for students who have successfully completed the third, fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh grade. Classes begin June 5 and July 11, 2005.
Over 30 classes to choose from in art, drama and performance, foreign language, math, music, science, animals, special interest classes and more.

ANIMALS
DOG OBEDIENCE & MORE Teach your dog how to heel & sit, sit/stay, down stay, stand/stay, and come when
called. You will learn how to teach your dog using the collar/leash correctly as well as motivational techniques. You will need preferably a 6 foot leather leash. You may use a chain choke collar or nylon training collars will be available for purchase. Bring water and drinking dish and up to date shot records. Students need to wear tennis shoesùno flip flops or sandals. This class is open to all-including any past students as well, with additional training provided depending on retention from previous training.
New this yearàstudents will participate in crafts, make dog snacks, have guest speakers, and more. The final day will be ôshow offö day where the students and their dogs will show what they have learned to parents and friends.

LIONS, TIGERS, AND BEARS, OH MY! (3-5TH GRADES) This course will examine predatory animals ranging from sharks to tigers, with special attention to man-eaters. WeÆll create art projects, hear stories, look at tracks and trailing, hunting methods, and the current status of these animals. Predators have a unique place in folklore and history, and weÆll learn about special places these creatures have in their environments. Large, dangerous animals are rare, and weÆll find out why.

ORIGAMI û NOT FOR THE RICH ANYMORE! (5TH-7TH GRADES) The beautiful art of paper folding or
origami has been around for centuries. However it was only something the rich could afford since paper was scarce back in 100 A.D. We will create a variety of pieces from animal designs and purses. They will be your keepsakes or a lovely gift for a special person.

SILENT FILM AS ART This class will introduce students to the unique and beautiful art of silent films. While all students are undoubtedly movie fans, this course will discuss the early days of cinemaùlong before computer animation and special effects. A history of early cinema will be provided in conjunction with a variety of silent films from the early 1900Æs. Students will learn how, with limited technology, these early films were able to create comedy, drama and generate emotion from the audience - - all without sound and fancy special effects. A select few films from the era or ôtalkiesö will also be shown to compare and contrast with their silent counterparts.

J-EE (JUNIOR ELECTRONIC ENGINEERS) (5-7TH GRADES) Electronics are a part of our future! I bet you can think of many, such as computers, DVDÆs, and phones to name a few. Gas stations, convenient marts, schools are full of electronic devices. WouldnÆt it be exciting to understand how and why all these electronic devices work? Junior Electronic Engineers can build and investigate the magic of electricity through simple circuit construction. ANCIENT ILLINOIS ARCHAEOLOGY (ALL GRADES) Imagine a city of 15,000 half the size of Danville, on the shores of the Mississippi in 1000 AD, 500 years before Christopher Columbus first explored the New World. This Native American city, Cahokia, did exist here in Illinois but totally disappeared. The Native American Legacy here is a rich one. Learn about the mystery of Cahokia and the story of other Native Americans in Illinois.

We will look at the recent history of the Middle East to understand the problems today: Why were there two Gulf Wars? Who are the Taliban? Why is Israel at war with the Palestinians? Why was the World Trade Center attacked twice? We will also use todayÆs news to understand tomorrow. What will happen in Iraq? What is the future of Iraq? This class is a must for any American student who wants to understand our place in the world.

K-CSI (KIDÆS CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION) (4-7TH GRADES) A NEW crime has been committed. Collect the evidence, analyze the data, and solve the crime. Activities will include fingerprinting, paper chromatography, DNA fingerprinting, substance analysis, creating and decoding secret messages, interrogating the witnesses, and finally (hopefully) solving the crime. MICROBE HUNTERS: EXPLORING THE UNSEEN WORLD OF MICROORGANISMS (4-7TH GRADES)
Microbes are everywhere û covering your body, in your food, and throughout your environment. Students will investigate the good, the bad, and the ugly of microbiology. First, the good û examine and understand the importance of microbes on our body and in our environment. Use bacteria to make food products such as yogurt. Then, the bad û an infectious disease has broken out in the classroom!! Play the role of an epidemiologist to discover where the infection originated. Make potato salad with your hands and examine the microbes that result. And finally, the ugly û youÆll just have to take the course to find out this part. Students will have fun learning and viewing the ôunseenö world of microbes.

TSUNAMIS, EARTHQUAKES, AND VOLCANOES (5-7TH GRADES) Join us to learn about the field of plate tectonics! Learn about what caused the destructive tsunami in Asia last winter. Learn why California may have a ôshakyö future. Understand the science behind the 1980 Mount St. HelenÆs eruption and the activity of the volcano today. Students will learn about the movement of the earthÆs plates and the resulting natural disasters through texts, photos, stories and films.

WHAT MAKES ROCKETS GO? (5th-7th GRADES) This class explores the history of rockets and their uses.
Students will explore flight by constructing paper, airplanes, model rocket kits and a group project in which they will make a model rocket powered by water and air using a pop bottle as part of a group contest. Students must purchase rocket kits from Hobby Lobby.

BABY-SITTERS TRAINING This is the American Red Cross course created to provide students with information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of parents or adult guardians. MEDIEVAL SIEGE TACTICS Learn how to make armor, study the weapons of the time, examine castle design and construction. Are there really crocodiles in those moats? Take a look at the facts and fiction evolved form the Legends of King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, and Robin Hood. The class will conclude with a room size board game which each student commanding a medieval army as part of a castle siege.

NAVAL TACTICS-1812 Learn about the ôwooden ships and iron menö, how the great ships like Old Iron Sides were built, sailed and manned. We will look at the difference between a ship-of-the-line and frigate, and what life was like on board. The class will conclude with a room size board game in which each student will captain their own ship.

ROMAN BOOT CAMP (5TH-7TH GRADES) This session will mix classroom with living history. Not only will we learn about the Roman army and its history, but we will also experience some of their daily routines. We will handle armor, some 2000 year old artifacts and some weapons (no sharp points or edges). We could call this class the ôRoman Army Experienceö. We may even build a small section of a Roman camp (fort). Caesar wants you in the Roman Army.

SHOW ME YOUR SPIRIT! Have you dreamed about becoming a cheerleader? Wellàdream no longer! At this
session you will learn the major moves, beginner jumps, and basic tumbling. If you are involved in local youth
football/cheerleading organizations, this would be a wonderful opportunity to brush up on your skills before going back to school in the fall. The instructor was an 8-year member of a local youth football/cheerleading organization, spent 6 years as a school cheerleader, danced at studios for 12 years, and traveled nationally and internationally for the sport.

The philosophy of the College for KIDS program is to provide fresh subject matter for motivating children, in order to extend the range of the their perception and understanding, as well as their powers of analysis and expression.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants for enrollment must have successfully completed third, fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh grade.
REGISTRATION
You can register for a class by telephone, in person, or by mail. Spaces will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis.
CANCELLATION POLICY
A Special Note to Parents: Early registration and payment is very important in preventing cancellation of classes due to low enrollment. Classes that do not have minimum enrollment and payment will be cancelled. You will be notified 3 days prior to the first day of the class if it has been cancelled. Please be sure to give our offices a daytime phone number.
SCHOLARSHIPS
A limited number of scholarships are available. For further information, call Community Education at (217) 443-8778. Scholarships will only cover the cost of one class. Scholarships CAN NOT be used on Sports Camps.
LOCATION OF CLASSES
All classes will be held on the campus of Danville Area Community College, unless otherwise indicated. Classes will be offered at the DACC Village Mall location and at Hoopeston area and school.
SERVICES
Between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., lunch and snacks may be purchased from the Student Union Cafe in Lincoln Hall located at the entrance of the DACC campus.
