Articles

To locate articles on health science related topics, it is most effective to go to the special databases devoted to those subjects or to search in the collections of e-journals on the subject.

EBSCOHost HealthSource Nursing/Academic Edition This database includes the content of 550 full-text journals as well as indexing another 850. It focuses on health-related topics, but the level of the articles tends toward the academic, making it highly suitable for the kinds of assignments students are asked to do. Searches can also be set up in a variety of ways to control the date and type of items retrieved.

EBSCOHost CINAHL Fulltext and CINAHL Select — The CINAHL (pronounced sin-all) databases are the premier source for nursing research online. You can use these databases alone or in conjunction with HealthSource Nursing/Academic to identify and access a large range of nursing and health related content. While CINAHL is primarily a citation collection, these editions provide access to approximately 400 titles in full text.

Liebert Health Science E-Journals — The Liebert collection contains more than 60 different electronic journals, primarily in health-related fields. Subject matter ranges from alternative therapies to viral immunology. Users may search by keyword or jump directly to the journal of interest and look through the tables of contents of various issues for relevant articles.

Medline — The premier medical citation (includes dentistry and psychiatry) database is available through FirstSearch, which adds some value over the public version available on the internet by cross-referencing some full-text articles with its other databases.

Science Resource Center - More than 200 magazines and academic journals, as well as topic overviews, experiments, biographies, illustrations and web links are gathered together in this database.

Elsevier Social and Behavioral Sciences Journal Collection - provides access to the last 4 years in full-text of a selection of Elsevier's premier journals in the areas of psychology, sociology, economics, business and management, artificial intelligence, computer and information science, linguistics, and urban planning. Citation and abstracts are available for earlier issues of the journals where full text is not provided.

Internet Sites

Health information is one of the most frequently sought types of information on the web. Because of the its nature, it is also one of the most important to take the time to ascertain the quality of the sources of information you are relying upon. Be particularly cautious about sites until you are aware of the funding sources sponsoring the information. The following web sites can generally be relied upon to provide high quality, current information.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - the U.S. public agency responsible for the health of the U.S. population, including disease control, workplace health, environmental health concerns and disaster-related health concerns.

National Library of Medicine's Electronic Library and Databases - This web page provides links to the full range of the NLM's array of resources, including: ClinicalTrials.gov, the database of ongoing clinical trials of drugs and procedures; Visible Human Project, an ongoing project to create an archive of three-dimensional imagery of the human body; American Indian Health and Asian American Health, two information portals dedicated to health concerns affecting these two groups; Bioethics, a locator to help identify materials on bioethics research; AIDSinfo and Cancer Information, disease-specific information portals; Household Product Database, a guide to the contents and potential health impact of every product likely to find its way into a consumer's household; Hazardouse Materials Substances Data Bank, TOXNET, TOXMAP, WISER, and Toxicology Literature, information sources regarding hazardous materials handling.

Hardin MD (MetaDirectory) is the in-depth collection of web links and image collections established by the University of Iowa's Hardin Library for the Health Sciences.

Kaiser Family Foundation's StateHealthFacts.org - statistical information related to health broken down by state. Everything from insurance coverage and provider information to disease statistics and health care concerns broken down by demographic category are available. Similar to StateHealthFacts is GlobalHealthFacts.org, the Kaiser Foundation's site for health statistics of a global nature.

Merck Manual of Medical Information, Second Home Edition, Online Version - the standard reference tool in an online form

Merck's Virtual Body Tours - animations, slides, and models to improve understanding of the human body. Other sources of anatomical information on the web include: Human Anatomy Online, and Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body. A specialized collection of images constitute an online atlas of brains in Brainmaps.org, a site that features "10 million megapixels of scanned images of serial sections of both primate and non-primate brains" including homo sapiens. Probably the most complete collection of anatomical reference material can be found at AnatomyAtlases.org, which is aimed primarily at health care providers and students. It includes several different virtual anatomical "collections", including one focussing on variation and another on bones. It also links to several digital libraries of medical resources ranging from radiology to biodefense and pediatrics.

ADAM Encyclopedia - provides information on diseases, conditions, poisons, surgeries, tests, injuries, symptoms, nutritions, etc.

Radiography Database - a large collection of cases, discussions and teaching documents by a British radiologist which have been assembled and made available since 1994 as a publicly accessible reference tool.

RNCentral - an online meeting place for nurses and nursing students, this site features useful links, chat, and humor. But the most helpful part of the site is the library of care plans that are available for nursing students to review and/or adapt. A blank plan is also available.

Physical Exam Study Guides - This web site prepared by the University of Florida Medical Program provides procedural guides for a range of routine physical exams in clear language and well-delineated steps.
