The basic question in relation to the author is how many authors are there. The number of authors, from none to ten or more, can provide clues to the type of source you are dealing with.
How many authors are listed for your source? Authors will be the first thing listed in a citation. Prefixes such as Ed. (editor), Dir. (Director), Narr. (Narrator) all refer to responsibilities other than author and do not count when looking for author information.
