In order to find books, videos, and other materials in a library, you use a catalog. These days, almost all libraries have electronic catalogs rather than drawers filled with file cards. Most web-based catalogs tend to operate in similar ways, so once you learn to operate one, you can take that skill and use it at other libraries.
This is the initial screen for the DACC catalog:

Decide what kind of search you need. Consider what you know.
If you know the title or author of what you are looking for, a title or author search is probably your best bet.
For an author, you must put the Last name first, then the first name or initial.
For a title, if the first word is "The" "A" or "An" just drop it and begin with the first significant word.
An Any Word Anywhere searches will return everything in which the term you type appears in any area of the entry.
Another good choice for most research projects is to begin with a Subject search.
And REMEMBER, if you have trouble with this, or any other stage in the research process, you can ask for Help! Ask your teacher! Ask Librarians! If you need to, just hit the PANIC button! |
