Access to Library Resources from Off Campus

Students, faculty and staff can use the library's electronic resources from off-campus. All that they need is a campus email or web-ct account and password.

Students who have never set up an account can do so by going to Student Network ID and PIN/Password page.

Full- or part-time faculty and staff should contact their supervisor or dean to make arrangements to receive an email account.

Proxy Server Log-In

For students, faculty and staff using the electronic resources from off campus, the library makes its online resources available by means of a proxy server. Users have to have Internet Explore 4.0 or higher, Netscape 4.7 or higher, or Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher installed to be authorized by the proxy server. On the library's main page, select Search for Articles, choose the resource you wish to use and enter your DACC user i.d. (NOT your email address) and password when prompted to do so.

Problems Using Resources from Off Campus?

Error Message: "Page cannot be found" error for every resource rather than a log-in screen. Your local network may be rejecting traffic from the proxy server. Consider these options:

  • If you administer your own personal firewall, then you will have to make an exception for:
    • port 4048
  • Windows XP users: Windows XP comes with its own firewall, and Microsoft recommends that you activate this feature to secure your computer. Read these instructions to open up port 4048.
  • If you are at a place of work with a local area network, then you should talk to your help desk or network administrator about how your network is configured.
  • If you continue to have trouble with this error message, contact Computer and Network Services.
Error Message: That username or password was incorrect. Please try again.

  • Did you type in your full email address rather than simply your user i.d. (the part up to the @ symbol)? Retry using just the user i.d.
  • Could you have typed either your user i.d. or password in incorrectly? Try again, making sure that CAPS Lock is off so that you are typing your password in in the proper combination of upper and lower case letters.
  • You may be having problems with your email account. Check and see if it allows you access to email and/or WebCT. After determining if it works in these contexts, contact if it does not work at all, contact Computer and Network Services.

Using AOL

  • AOL does not interact well with the proxy server that we use. If you use AOL as your internet service provider, minimize the AOL browser and open an appropriate version of an Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator or Mozilla Firefox browser instead.

"High-Speed" Internet Services

  • If you use a "high-speed" internet service or accelerator program from such dial-up providers as NetZero HiSpeed, you will need to turn off the high-speed option while using the databases.

Cookies

  • EZProxy needs to be able access cookies from your browser. You will need to have the "Accept Cookies" option of your browser turned on. Google's Search History and Settings: How to Enable Cookies provides all you need to know to enable cookies on the latest generation of browsers, while its How to Enable Cookies offers a quick users' guide to resetting all the major browser types.

Pop-Up Blockers

  • Turn off third-party pop-up blockers as these can interfere with the proxy server.

Enable Javascript

  • While having javascript turned off in your browser won't affect whether or not you get logged in, it will affect whether you can successfully access certain databases. This Google page offers explanations about how to enable javascript on the latest browsers, while the University of Michigan's Engineering Department's web site offers a comprehensive guide to enabling javascript for almost every browser from an earlier generation.
