In order to find books, videos, and other materials in a library, you use a catalog. These days, almost all libraries have electronic catalogs rather than the old system of drawers filled with file cards. DACC's online catalog is called Illinet Online .
As an online student, you may not be using DACC's library, but much of the information applies to any electronic catalog. Web-based catalogs tend to operate in similar ways.
This is the initial screen for the Illinet catalog:

Decide what kind of search you need.
"Browse" or "Start of" searches will drop you into an alphabetical list according to what you enter.
"Browse" and "Start of" searches are located on the first search screen.
"Keyword" searches will return everything in which the term you type appears in that particular part of the entry. For example, "Keyword" search in the "Title" field for "gun" will return every title in which the word "gun" appears.
To use a keyword search, click on the tab for Guided Keyword Search at the top of the box.
If you know the title or author of a work, you can search using that information.
For an author, use Browse Author or Browse Prolific Author : Last name first, then the first name or initial.
For a title, Start of Title: If the first word is "The" "A" or "An" just drop it and begin with the next word in the title.
For most research, you will want to begin with a "Browse Subject " search.
And REMEMBER, if you have trouble with this, or any other stage in the research process, you can ask for Help! Ask your teacher! Ask Librarians! If you need to, just hit the PANIC button! |
