- Apply to your school of choice approximately eleven months in advance (except the University of Illinois at Urbana...see your advisor for more information). Many university applications are available for students in the Counseling Department and/or on the Web.
- Decide whether you will live in campus housing or in an apartment off-campus. Submit your deposit early. Some colleges and universities have dorms reserved for transfer students only.
- Have your advisor check to see if you have met the Illinois constitution requirement for graduation. If you have not, confirm the best way for you to satisfy this requirement.
- Meet with your advisor to plan out all remaining semesters of course work.
- Ask your advisor to verify your major and degree on your official record.
- Ask your advisor for a DACC catalog for you to keep. It is sometimes necessary to provide course descriptions when transferring to out-of-state schools or community colleges, or when applying for jobs.
- Request transcript(s) to be sent to your school of choice to accompany your application. At this time also request that transcripts be sent to the transfer school at the completion of each remaining semester. Also, remember to request transcripts from any other colleges you have attended to be sent to your transfer school.
- Request official copy of FINAL transcript for yourself.
- Provide best known address for future contact.
- File a petition to certify the Illinois Articulation Initiative General Education Core (Only for students transferring to the University of Illinois).
- Verify your high school transcript or GED is on file at the same time you file your intent to graduate.
Your financial aid package does not automatically transfer to your new college or university. If you have a federal education loan, you must notify your lender or loan servicer of your plans to transfer before your loan automatically enters grace or repayment status. To ensure that your financial aid is in order, follow these steps:
- Meet With Your Current Financial Aid Administrator
- Cancel any remaining disbursements of loans or other financial aid at your present school if you are transferring in mid-year. If you want to continue receiving federal education loan funds, you will need to reapply through the new institution’s financial aid office.
- Inform the appropriate source(s) of your transfer if you have a scholarship or other gift aid that will continue at your new college or university.
- Ask that a financial aid transcript (FAT) be sent to the new institution, if required.
- Check on the deadlines for submitting the required financial aid transcripts and forms to your new school.
- Request a deferment form, have it signed and certified, and send it to your loan holder.
- Ask about financial aid, such as scholarships, grants, and work-study programs. Some schools have special awards specifically for transfer students. In addition, individual academic departments may offer grants and/or scholarships for students in certain disciplines.
- Apply for any federal education loans you will require.
- Request a calendar of financial aid deadlines and important dates. If one isn’t available, ask when you can expect to receive your award letter and what your follow-up deadline is.
- Notify your loan holder of the date you intend to transfer, the name of your new college or university, and your new address.
- Indicate your anticipated graduation date at the new institution. This date will become the new trigger date upon which your repayment start date will be based.
- Send a signed deferment form from your new college or university to your loan holder to verify enrollment.
- Allow plenty of time (at least two months) for your loan holder to update your records.
