Steps for Rhetoric I Proficiency

A student's score on the Writing Skills portion of the ASSET Placement Test must be 50 or higher.

A student with a score of 50 or higher has the opportunity to attempt to proficiency Rhetoric I by following the steps listed below:

  1. The student must take the Advanced Language ASSET test. This test can be arranged on an individual basis with the Assessment Center, Cannon Hall, (217) 443-8708.

IF the student scores at least a 37 on the Advanced Language test, they qualify to attempt the actual Rhetoric I proficiency.

In order to proceed to step 2, the Academic Dean for Liberal Arts MUST see the student's test scores for both the Writing skills and Advanced Language exams. The scores will either be issued to the student after the Advanced Language test or sent directly to the Academic Dean for Liberal Arts.

  2. The student must see the Academic Dean for Liberal Arts, Clock Tower Center, (217) 443-8841, for information regarding the actual exam and to arrange the exam time. The student will receive the proficiency form for the exam. The proficiency form must be signed by the Academic Dean for Liberal Arts.

  3. The proficiency form must then be signed by the Registrar, Vermilion Hall, (217) 443-8803.

  4. The proficiency form must then be taken to the Cashier's Office, Vermilion Hall, where the student must pay half the tuition of Rhetoric I.

NOTE: This amount is non-refundable and cannot be applied toward tuition.

  5. Once the student passes the proficiency, they are eligible to register for Rhetoric II. The credit for Rhetoric I will be posted on the student's transcript once Rhetoric II is passed with a grade of "C" or above.
It is best to register the student for Rhetoric I before they attempt any of the above mentioned steps. The student can drop this class if they indeed pass the proficiency.
