The diversified training required for persons employed in the plant maintenance positions is provided in this program. Students are given instruction in electricity, machining, hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanincal systems.
Nature of Work
Maintenance mechanics do preventive maintenance on machines in a plant or factory. They clean parts, repair and replace parts when they break down, and test equipment once it is fixed. Their work is not only important because an idle machine will delay production, but also because a machine that is not properly repaired and maintained may damage the final product or injure an operator. After diagnosing a problem, the equipment is repaired and parts replaced. When repairing electronically controlled machinery, they may use electronic and computer skills to repair sophisticated machinery.
Jobs
Maintenance mechanics, millwrights, and industrial machinery mechanics.
Employers
Metal working, chemical, transportation industries, public utilities, and construction firms.
Outlook
Since there is a slight surplus, the employment of maintenance mechanics is expected to grow more slowly than the average for all occupations through the year 2006. However, those with the broad skills and a degree may have an advantage. In Illinois, most job openings will result from replacement needs.
