  Automotive Technology
        Associate in Applied Science Degree

This program is designed to prepare students for entry level positions in automotive dealership repair facilities.

Nature of Work
Automotive technology deals with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of automobiles and light trucks. Mechanics may do routine service such as inspecting and lubricating engines and other components. They repair or replace parts. In most dealership facilities, mechanics will also use electronic service equipment, such as infrared engine analyzers and computerized diagnostic devices. In larger shops, work has become increasingly specialized.

Automotive mechanics, shop servicemen, service writers, and repair service estimators.

Employers
Automotive dealerships, independent repair shops, gasoline service stations, motor vehicle manufacturers, self-employement, and automotive service facilities at department, automotive, and home supply stores.

Outlook
Automotive mechanics will be among the occupations with the most job openings. Those with formal automotive training will have very favorable opportunities. Employment opportunities for mechanics are expected to increase about as fast as average for all occupations through the year 2006. Growth will be concentrated in dealerships, independent automotive repair shops, and specialty car care chains.

Earnings
Nationally, median weekly earnings of automotive mechanics who were wage and salary workers were $478 in 1996. In Illinois, entry level wages for mechanics are $19,760/yr, and median wages are $29,120/yr. For service managers, entry level wages are $24,960/yr, and median wages are $30,160/yr.
