Nature of Work
Administrative assistants coordinate office activities to ensure information gets disseminated to staff clients. They control day-to-day office business operations, data base management and desktop publishing programs to prepare reports. They use computer software programs to create and prepare business reports and graphics. They have frequent contact with higher management.

Office managers, clerical supervisors, stenographers, general office clerks, claim representatives, adjustment clerks, bill and account correspondents, and welfare eligibility workers.
Employers
New graduates will find jobs in administrative offices in all types of firms, but the best opportunities will be found in the health and legal services fields. Private business, government agencies, colleges and universities are just some of the areas for employment.

Locally, earnings average about $18,000 for new graduates. Illinois shows a middle wage range for clerical supervisors of $20,530 - $31,990; for secretaries, ex legal and medical, $17,260 - $28,250. National earnings for new graduates are about $20,000 in private businesses and $19,000 in government agencies. With five or more years experience, salaries average about $28,000, and in supervisory positions, up to $38,000.
