Teaching Philosophy and Practice:
To truly appreciate science, students must rediscover the wonder with which they explored the world around them when they were children, when each day brought new adventures. For most students, that wonder was long ago lost in the day-to-day routine, forgotten during one too many boring lecture, or surrendered when faced with incomprehensible jargon. As a teacher, my job is to reignite this delight of discovery that has faded.
I must convey with awe the amazing simplicity that abounds in even the seemingly most complex scientific phenomena. I must entertain with knowledge, revealing exciting insights into the world around us. I must open doors to new ways of thinking, experiencing, and understanding. I must strip away tedious terminology and get back to basic concepts and simple words so students realize that science is not only approachable, but comprehensible; it is not only relevant, but essential for understanding all of life.
I must assess each individual's personal barricades, then map new roads
around these obstacles. Each student is both reachable and teachable,
and I must find the best path to guide them to success. Science is a process
of inquiry so students must learn, once more, how and why to inquire.
I must provide the tools and the reason to do so. If I have a passion
for what I teach, my enthusiasm becomes infectious and my students leave
my classes assessing their worlds with newly opened eyes and minds that
ever hunger for more knowledge.
