The Liberal Arts Division of Danville Area Community College is facilitating a “HIV/AIDS” Prevention across the Curriculum” project to promote HIV awareness on campus and in the community.  Sponsoring agencies for the grant are the American Association of Community Colleges and the Center for Disease Control.  The project has the active support of our community partners, the Vermilion County Health Department, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District and the Vermilion County HIV/AIDS Task Force, which are providing speakers and resources to build the factual foundations for this prevention effort.

On campus, speakers are visiting classes to initiate the preparations that will culminate in an awareness fair on November 9, 2004.  The fair will feature prevention projects from classes across the curriculum, such as speck, rhetoric, acting, microbiology, video production, psychology, and education.  The day will be eventful.  Student paintings, drawings and designs inspired by Richard Wilson, an artist with HIV, will be shown along with his art.  Mr. Wilson will also coordinate our students in a performance art piece.  Other activities will include the Acting I performance of their original play about HIV, speech presentations, and HIV Jeopardy.  Booths will show off brochures designed by the technical writing class, displays on the global impact of the pandemic, and student writing and research.  Community agencies will inform about their current work and provide counseling.  The video production class, our guest artist, and media releases will publicize and also document the project.

An essential component of this project is service learning, where students will educate their peers and do volunteer work in the community.  Service learning opportunities are incorporated into the fair and other prevention activities, such as the placement of student research in the library or having student works published in our literary magazine.  Direct service learning will involve students presenting in other classes, for workshops, and at community and youth gatherings.  Reflection and celebrations, including an evaluation of our efforts, discussions on the meaning of service, and awards to highlight our achievements, are planned.  In addition, a pre and post project quiz of student participants and non-participants will assess any gains in knowledge.  The project will extend into the spring 2005 semesters with the continuation of prevention activities in classes.
