COURSE DESCRIPTION:
An introductory course which emphasizes the thoughtful preparation and practice of delivering speeches before a group.  Students are expected to present both informative and persuasive speeches.
PREREQUISITES:
Place into ENGL101.

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
The course is designed to introduce the student to the basic principles of effective public speaking. Emphasis is placed on the thoughtful preparation and practice of delivering speeches to an audience. The course should help with the development of self-confidence, positive speaking skills, and effective language skills. Students will learn to do audience analysis, research, and outlining.

EVALUATION:
A point system will be used to determine the course grade. Although subject to change, grades will be computed on the following basis:

1. 45% of the final grade is based on exams, outlines, and the Internet assignments.
2. 55% of the final grade is based on speeches.

SPEECH ASSIGNMENTS
Speech 1 (50 Points)
Four-five minutes in length. The subject of your speech is yourself.

Speech 2 (50 Points)
This is a four-five minute special occasion speech (eulogy, wedding toast, acceptance...)

Speech 3 (125 Points)
Five and a half to six and a half minutes in length. This is an informative speech. You are informing your audience about a topic or subject that you feel is important and that you are interested in. You may select any topic that gets instructor approval. You will be required 5 sources for this speech.

Speech 4 (100 Points)
Five-six minutes in length. This is a sales pitch. You will have a couple of options but the bottom line is you will be trying to "SELL" a product/invention to the class. (This is a type of persuasive speech) possibly working with (against) a partner.

Speech 5 (125 Points)
This is a persuasive speech that will be seven-eight minutes long. You must pick a controversial topic and have an opponent to present the "other" side of the argument. You must have FIVE resources for this speech.

Speech 6 (100 Points)
This is a group presentation. You will work as a group and then present it to the class. We will discuss options for this assignment as the semester progresses. One such option is the Ozone assignment, handouts to follow, this is partially an in-class assignment but it also requires a paper.

Students will orally cite their information in speeches that use research.
