COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Emphasizes the significance of nursing care in relation to complex health needs of the individual from birth to older adulthood.  Focuses on the collaborative communication with other members of the health care team and with the individual and family in the hospital environment for health teaching and client advocacy.  Theory and clinical experience enhance the integration of principles of advanced nursing.  (Course includes theoretical and clinical components.)
PREREQUISITES:
Consent from Nursing Director and NURS190, NURS191, NURS194, NURS195, and NURS296.

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Assess the interaction patterns of individuals and groups across the lifespan and in various developmental stages.
  • Use standards of nursing practice to perform and evaluate client care.
  • Utilize appropriate systems of communication to achieve positive client outcomes.
  • Evalaute the effectiveness of care provided that safety moves the client and family towards positive outcomes aross the lifespan and in various develomental stages.
  • Provide acurate and safe nursing care in diverse settings to help clients meet their bio-psycho-social needs across the lifespan and in various developmetmetal stages.
  • Modify the teaching plan based on evaluation of progress toward meting identified learning outcomes.
  • Interact with other members of the healthcare team to solve problems to acheive client goals and outcomes.
  • Assist the client and family to access available resources and services.

TOPICAL OUTLINE:
NURS 297 is organized into six (6) units. Units 1-6 discuss adult & pediatric health conditions that are treated medically or surgically.

EVALUATION:
Teaching Methods: Lecture, discussion, collaborative learning techniques, role playing, case studies, audio-visual aides, computer-assisted instruction, group projects, observational experiences, clinical laboratory with client-centered learning, Method of Assessment: The following grade scale is utilized:

100 - 92 = A
91 - 84 = B
83 - 76 = C

Five percent (5%) will be deducted for all late testing.

A grade between 75.5 and 75.9 WILL NOT be rounded up to obtain a passing grade; the student must achieve a 76% to pass.

Unit Tests = 80% of the course grade
Final Comprehensive Examination = 20% of the course grade

Theoretical Component - Student must receive a "C" average or higher
Clinical Component - Student must receive a "Satisfactory" with an average of "3.0" or higher on a five-point Likert scale. The clinical experience will be evaluated based upon the clinical assessment tool. A grade between 2.5 and 2.9 WILL NOT be rounded up to obtain a passing clinical grade. A student must achieve a 3.0 to pass clinical.
