COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Scheduling and planning a learning environment including themes, projects, and activities.  Curriculum areas of art, gross and fine motor, movement and music, dramatic play and group time will be addressed.  Practice teaching activities, generate ideas for other activities, and identify sources for future ideas.
PREREQUISITES:
College-level reading skills required (place out of or complete DEVR098).
NOTES:
This course is not available for web registration.

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
1. To understand the purpose of planning: yearly, weekly, and daily.
2. To write plans for yearly, weekly, and daily activities.
3. To demonstrate an understanding of the importance of creativity in planning, teaching, and learning across the curriculum.
4. To plan and present art activities that are developmentally appropriate for young children.
5. To plan and present gross and fine motor activities that are developmentally appropriate for young children.
6. To plan and present movement and music activities that are developmentally appropriate for young children.
7. To plan and present dramatic play activities that are developmentally appropriate for young children.
8. To plan and present "group time" activities that are developmentally appropriate for young children.
9. To generate a list of developmentally appropriate activities in these curriculum areas.
10. To identify sources of further activities in the areas of art, fine and gross motor, music and creative movement, dramatic play and group time.


TOPICAL OUTLINE:


Week 1: Introduction to curriculum planning
A. Yearly, weekly, and daily plans
B. Criteria for evaluating individual activities

Week 2 through 6: Each session will address characteristics of developmentally appropriate activities; how to carry out a planned activity; ideas for other activities; and resources for where to find activities in the following curriculum areas:

1. Art
2. Fine motor/manipulatives
3. Gross motor/indoors and outdoors
4. Music and creative movement
5. Dramatic Play
6. Group time

Supplemental handouts as provided by the instructor.


EVALUATION:
The students will assemble a portfolio of activities in the above listed curriculum areas.

The students will write plans in three to six of the curriculum areas for a specific activity.
