COURSE DESCRIPTION:
4 non-degree credit hours
A continuation of English 098. Students who (1) complete the requirements for the course and (2) demonstrate proficiency on the COMPASS Language Usage Skills Placement Test will be placed in Rhetoric 101 or Communication Skills 121 or 130. Students who do not meet both of these requirements will be reassigned to English 099.

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
This course is designed to help students apply language skills to paragraph development and essay writing, so they may succeed in Rhetoric 101 or in Communication Skills 121 or 130.

The student will demonstrate improvement in the following areas:
  1. Getting started writing
  2. Discovering the paragraph
  3. Developing the paragraph
  4. Writing the essay
  5. Improving writing skills
  6. Reviewing the basics
  7. Strengthing spelling skills

EVALUATION:
Attendance-- No more than two (2) absences per credit hour will be allowed for day classes meeting during the fall and spring semesters with the exception of late start classes where only six (6) absences will be allowed for the semester. No more than one(1)absence per credit hour will be allowed for evening or summer school classes

Placement on completion of this course:

For assignment to Rhetoric 101 or Communication Skills 121 or 130, students will do the following:

  1. SUBMIT AN APPROVED WRITING SAMPLE.
  2. Earn a grade of S.
  3. Complete Evergreen.
  4. Complete all individually and class assigned work.
  5. Complete all writing assignments.
  6. Score appropriately on the COMPASS Language Skills Placement Test.


For reassignment to DEVE 099, students will perform at less than the above levels.
