COURSE DESCRIPTION:
1-4 Semester Hours (Variable Credit)
A review of English for written communication. Students who (1) complete the requirements for the course, (2) demonstrate proficiency on a Mastery Test, (3) have an approved writing sample and (4) receive an appropriate score on the ASSET Language Usage Skills Placement Test will be placed in Rhetoric 101 or Communication Skills 121 or 130. Students who do not meet these requirements will be placed in English 099 or re-assigned to English 098.  Non-Degree credit.
PREREQUISITES:
Place into DEVE098.
NOTES:
This course is not available for web registration.

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
This course is designed to raise the students’ level of proficiency in language skills so that they may succeed in English 099, Rhetoric 101, or Communication Skills 121 or 130.

The student will demonstrate improvement in the following areas:

EVALUATION:
Attendance is an important factor in successful completion of this course.
No more than two (2) absences per credit hour will be allowed for day classes with the exception of late-start classes where only six (6) absences will be allowed for the semester.  No more than one (1) absence per credit hour will be allowed for the evening or summer school classes. Students who are absent more than this amount will be dropped from this course unless they make arrangements with their instructor.


  1. Neatness and legibility of handwriting are important factors in this course if assignments are not done in a word processing program.
  2. Placement on completion of course.
    1. For assignment to Rhetoric 101 or Communication Skills 121 or 130, students will do the following:
      1. SUBMIT AN APPROVED WRITING SAMPLE.
      2. Earn a grade of S.
      3. Complete all individually and class assigned work.
      4. Complete all writing assignments.
      5. Correctly answer 74 questions or higher on the Mastery Test.
      6. Score appropriately on COMPASS Language Usage Skills Placement Tests.
    2. For assignment to English 099, students will do the following:
      1. SUBMIT AN APPROVED WRITING SAMPLE.
      2. Earn a grade of S.
      3. Complete all individually and class assigned work.
      4. Complete all writing assignments.
      5. Correctly answer 62 questions or higher on the Mastery Test.
    3. For reassignment to English 098, students will perform at less than the above levels.

    Determination of Grades

    Criteria for grading:

    1. Attendance and class participation
    2. Completion of writing assignments
    3. Tests and quizzes

    S 80% or above
    U 79% or below
