COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students will learn the basic coding ground rules and the appropriate way to find CPT and ICD-9-CM codes for classifying diagnoses and procedures, as well as becoming familiar with key terms and utilizing resources to increase coding accuracy.

PREREQUISITES:
BOFF242 (course is 8 weeks)

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
CPT
By the end of the section, the students will be able to:
  • Describe the development and purposes of Healthcare Common Procedure Coding Systems (HCPCS) and CPT.
  • Identify the different sections found in the CPT and HCPCS manuals.
  • Identify and use the CPT coding conventions.
  • Identify the components on a record needed for accurate assignment of CPT codes.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of coding rules, principles and exceptions as applied to CPT coding system and HCPCS.
