COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A secondary education competency based course in basic reading skills. Instruction covers reading rate, vocabulary, and comprehension, reading concepts and organizing facts, understanding the main idea, making judgements, drawing conclusions, and making inferences. Instruction is designed to improve comprehension skills through reading paragraphs, short stories, and novels. A continuation of Reading I.

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:

TOPICAL OUTLINE:
A. Comprehension
  1. Read various short articles found in newspapers.
  2. Read various articles of interest found in magazines and journals.
  3. Read a number of books.
  4. Write a short summary of reading selections.
  5. Write a brief reaction paragraph about reading selections.
B. Reading Rate, Vocabulary, and Comprehension
  1. Increase his/her reading rate.
  2. Demonstrate his/her comprehension of reading material by answering various objective comprehension questions.
  3. Demonstrate his/her comprehension by completing exercises using the Cloze technique.
  4. Improve his/her vocabulary through reading.
  5. Demonstrate comprehension by writing short summaries about various sections.
C. Vocabulary Improvement
  1. Improve his/her vocabulary through reading short passages.
  2. Improve his/her vocabulary through the study of Greek and Latin roots.
  3. Improve his/her vocabulary through the study of multiple meanings.
  4. Improve his/her vocabulary through the practice of using works precisely.
  5. Improve his/her vocabulary through the study of various word forms.

EVALUATION:
The student will receive a letter grade of A, B, or C, for successful completion of the course.  The student will receive a grade of U for unsatisfactory progress.  Grades are earned by completion of Mastery Tests given at the end of each unit within the course.  Grades are determined by the following scale.
100% - 90% = A
89% - 80% = B
79% - 70% = C
69% - 0% = U
The student will be given an I for incomplete work.  The work needs to be completed within 30 days to earn a passing grade.  If the work is not completed in specified time, the student will receive an U for the course.
