COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Further development of basic skills, concepts, and techniques in painting media.  "Heavy" paints used to compose and explore subjects drawn from environment and imagination. Emphasis placed on increasing proficiency, inventiveness, and individual expression. Class meets 5 hours per week.
PREREQUISITES:
ARTS141
NOTES:

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
Development of personal vision and skills. More freedom with material. Experiement to enrich knowledge of materials. Finding new ideas. Four to six paintings due by class end.

TOPICAL OUTLINE:
Some suggested possibilities at the discretion of the teacher and the class.

A. Experiments with materials.
1. Painting Surfaces: Gessoed canvas, papers, masonite
2. Complimentary colors
2. How to glaze
3. Finding unity - using a set of compliments (black white)
4. Paint only in washes
5. Palette knife painting
6. Paint on metal, wood
7. Paint by printing and spilling-collage experiments will be used by students to enlarge own personal expertise
B. Personal Vision
1. Choose subject matter of personal choice -portrait, land, still-life abstract
2. Using symbol to enhance the image
3. Make a painting about a large theme - use symbol, personal subject matter
4. "Draw" a painting - first on canvas - paint dry find illustrations if you don’t know how it looks
5. Develop a sketch book, photos, magazine cutouts included - get an assignment book to keep color knowledge, color mixes, color you see and ideas from your dreams, thoughts
