COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A basic course designed to sharpen skills in color theory, mixing, and understanding, brush-to-canvas techniques.  Applied instruction will be geared towards the student’s skill level. Class meets 5 hours per week.
PREREQUISITES:
College-level reading skills required (place out of or complete DEVR098).

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
The objective of this course is to provide the BEGINNING PAINTING STUDENT opportunities to learn and develop the SKILLS needed to competently complete the various tasks necessary in the IDEATION, FORMATION, PRODUCTION, COMPLETION and FINISHING of a variety of PAINTING PROJECTS; to prepare the ART STUDENT for successful completion of their PORTFOLIO; to prepare the student for more advanced study in specific art forms such as illustration, graphic design, drawing, CAD, Software applications, other two-dimensional formats; to enable the student to design and create PAINTINGS for DECORATIVE as well as AESTHETIC purposes; enable the student to discern and appreciate FORM, STRUCTURE, VOLUME, MASS and COLOR in Nature and Man-Made Environments; instill an awareness of Historical and Contemporary PAINTING.

Color mixing
Painting surface supports; priming surfaces, gesso
Acrylic polymer mediums
Painting techniques; washes, opaque and transparent
Pen and ink, impasto
Wet into wet, knife application, underpainting, glazes
Historical and contemporary painting
Painting subjects: still-life, portrait, self-portrait, abstract, fantasy
Representational landscape, interiors, digital sources
Framing and presentation

Some good books on Painting are available in the DACC Library. Some books are available in the office. Please use them only in the office or ask an instructor for assistance.

Students are graded on their ability to complete assignments on time; degree of CRAFTSMANSHIP; ability to INCORPORATE their IDEAS into the FINAL PRODUCT; degree of Experimentation; OVERALL EFFORT; makes good use of STUDIO TIME; spending time outside of class in completion of work; maintaining a SKETCHBOOK with ideas, drawings, and notes; Contributing to the COOPERATIVE MAINTENANCE of a HEALTHY STUDIO ENVIRONMENT.
