COURSE DESCRIPTION:
’Few forces drive adults more strongly than meeting the needs of their children.’ Reading With Children offers parents practical strategies in assisted reading, recorded books, journal writing, and storytelling. Included in the curriculum are parenting skills such as self-esteem, discipline, and family activities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES / GOALS:
A. Develop strategies to improve student’s self esteem.
B. Enhance positive interactions between students and their children.
C. Improve students’ reading ability.
D. Enrich students’ oral reading and storytelling skills.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
A. Building Self Esteem
  1. Daily positive messages repeated 10 times (self talk)
  2. Self Esteem exercises
    a. Introduce other classmates to group.
    b. Chart their own 10 best qualities.
    c. Use only positive comments about others in class.
  3. Student assignment - compliments each child daily.
B. Positive Interactions
  1. Daily craft activities
    a. Craft activity is repeated with children
    b. Daily journal entries concerning results
  2. Discipline studies
    a. Read Let’s Work It out - Topics for Parents: Discipline
    b. Creating & keeping chore charts
    c. Rewarding children for good behavior
C. Reading improvement
  1. 15 minutes of daily personal reading.
  2. 15 minutes reading to children.
  3. Journal entries concerning story plots.
  4. Journal entries of children’s reactions.
D. Oral reading and story telling
  1. Read into tape recorder during class.
  2. Watch Reading to Your Children video.
  3. Video tape student’s presentations
    a. Reading a children’s book or telling a story.

EVALUATION:
Students will receive an "S" for satisfactory progress or an "I" for incomplete based upon class attendance, participation and mastery of assigned tasks.
