The Community Education department at Danville Area Community College is a program dedicated to enhancing and improving the quality of life of area residents. Community Education offers a variety of learning experiences for all ages, through courses, seminars, workshops, tours and other activities.
People from all walks of life and all ages participate both as instructors and students. The positive, non-competitive environment of the Community Education department promotes sharing of ideas, knowledge and attitudes.
General Studies Programs
General Studies courses provide continuing opportunity for trying new skills or brushing up on old ones. Danville Area Community College is committed to the educational enlightenment of all its citizens and provides an opportunity for day and evening courses at off-campus centers in co-operation with the secondary schools in the District. The credits earned in General Studies courses do not count toward the Associate Degree requirements.
The General Studies courses offered on the College campus and at off-campus centers are short unit courses varying from one to sixteen weeks in length. A high school diploma is not required to enroll in the courses.
Refund Policy
Refunds will be granted according to the following college policy: withdrawal with refund from classes which meet from four (4) to twelve (12) weeks must occur by the end of the first week the class meets.
Withdrawal with refund from classes meeting less than 4 weeks must occur before the first class meeting.
Refunds will be given after two (2) classes but before the third class for those meeting 16 weeks.

Community Education Programs and Courses
The courses are offered as a community service to the residents of our service area. As no state funding is received for these courses, they must be self-supporting from the fees charged to the participants.

There is a great deal of flexibility in the offerings in these courses. Some of the courses that are currently being offered include:
CREATIVE ARTS & CRAFTS
Market Basket
Create a beautiful flat bottom basket to carry pies, lunch, books or
whatever!!! You’ll be using flat reed and oak hoops. The approximate
size is 12”x10
Pottery, Hand Building or Wheel Throwing
Beginner, intermediate and advanced students all WELCOME! Throw
functional pots, throw bowls, plates and cups. Clay and some glazes
provided.
Weed Basket
Create a small pouch like basket to hang on the
wall. You can put fresh/dry flowers in this beautiful basket. You will
learn various decorative touches to add to the basket.
Everything Fleece
Make several projects out of soft and snuggly fleece, no sewing experience
needed. Make fleece rugs, scarves, blankets and other projects.
Instructor will provide supply list prior to first day of class.
Joy of Oil Painting
Come join the fun! Learn how to create your own master piece in just one
day. You will have step by step instruction that will have you painting
in no time. All skill levels are welcome--So if you are a beginner and
just want to try it out or if you are an experienced artist, this class is
for you. Each session will create a unique painting and be finished by
the end of the day to take home and cherish forever.
Shaggy Rag Edged Quilts
(Minimum hand sewing experience required.) Make a soft raggy seamed lap
quilt to snuggle with while reading or in front of the TV. Need to supply
your own fabric that will ravel and fray well (flannels, jeans, or
“homespun” fabrics best.) Can be made from old jeans, so save your jeans!
Stepping Stones
Students will create a stained glass stepping stone using an innovative
mosaic method that requires no gluing or grouting.
FOOD
Food Service
This course is designed to prepare food service employees to meet the
Illinois certification requirement. Topics include: foodborne disease,
facilities, equipment, personal hygiene, and inspection techniques. Exam
will be given at last class meeting. Attendance is a must!
Food Service Certification Renewal
Meets the State guideline effective for persons with a valid Food Service
license--requires 5 hours of continuing education credit to renew licenses
that expire October 01, 1999 and thereafter.
30 Minute Meals
Want to spend more time with the family and less time in the kitchen?
The tips learned in this class will enable busy people to put dinner on
the table effortlessly. Join us for an evening of delicious cooking, and
apply these tips to your life as a busy spring and summer begins. We will
be making Fajitas in this class.
Yeast Breads - Level 1
You will learn a little history as well as the science of yeast breads.
Each student will be measuring, mixing and kneading their own classic loaf
of white bread/rolls. The unfinished dough will be sent home with
instructionson how to bake and enjoy.
FITNESS & RECREATION
Adult Golf
This a great opportunity for beginning and intermediate golfers who want
to learn and improve several areas of their game. The class will include
instruction on problem areas the golfer might have as well as the basics
in: grip, stance, back swing, down swing, follow-through, and finish
position. Each participant will have the opportunity to have his/her golf
swing analyzed. Rules of the game and golf etiquette will also be
covered.
AMERICAN SIGN & FOREIGN LANGUAGE
American Sign Language, Beginning (Part I)
An introduction to American Sign Language. Students will learn the
basics: vocabulary, grammar, history, numbers, fingerspelling, mixed
words, conceptual signs, and Deaf Culture. Active participation is
essential! Come prepared for learning and fun!
Conversational German, Beginning
The German language will be introduced in this course which will emphasize
conversation and culture. Students will acquire a working vocabulary and
the ability to be understood in every day situations.
Hispanic American Culture
This course will help you develop the basic skills of understanding,
speaking and reading as well as cultural awareness of the Hispanic world.
This Spanish course includes a balanced treatment of grammatical and
conversational practice in context. You will be involved in activities
that enhance comprehension and communication such as dialogues, role
playing, readings and group activities. You will learn about the Hispanic
world and culture through the experiences with Hispanic activities such as
foods, dances, games, music, celebrating holidays, visiting restaurants
and stores.
Hola Amigos!
Welcome to “Hola Amigos”. This course entails an elementary introduction
to Spanish grammar as well as to conversational Spanish. It employs a
multifaceted approach to initiate development of the four essential skills
of speaking, listening, reading and writing, with the heaviest emphasis
being placed on the first two skills. Students should be able to both
comprehend and speak the language at a basic functional level by the
semester’s end. These goals can be achieved through the exclusive use of
Spanish in the classroom, consistent attendance, daily preparation and
active participation.
GARDENING & FLORAL DESIGN
A Tisket, A Tasket
Students will learn Basic Floral Design within a basket. Bring basic
cutting tools and wire cutters. Class is limited to 15-20 students.
Floral Trio, Basic Floral Design
Using fresh flowers students will learn to design a floral arrangement
using three basic flowers. Containers provided.
Home Landscaping
Outdoor living is easy when you create a beautiful yard that seems to care
for itself. Design your planting for maximum effect at a minimum
cost.
Annual Lawn and Garden Workshop
This years theme is “Creating Magical Spaces”, Keynote Speaker is Jane
Taylor. Program is hosted by DACC’s Corporate& Community Education and
the Master Gardeners of the U of I Extension Office in Danville, Illinois.

The Living Wreath
Students will make a living wreath using various mediums. Bring basic
cutting tools and wire cutters.
GRANT WRITING
This workshop addresses all aspects of successful grant seeking including: developing and assessing proposal ideas, designing and writing a complete grant proposal review process. Sources of grant support will also be identified.
HIV FAIR AND CONFERENCE
Panels of speakers on what the latest research and the issues involved around persons with HIV; student work on prevention themes and community resources will be highlighted in displays.
HOBBIES, OCCUPATIONAL & PRACTICAL SKILLS
Photography I "The Basics" This course of study introduces the student to: The use and handling of 35 mm as well as digital cameras; a working knowledge of film and digital imaging; the basic elements of a photograph; an understanding of lighting, both natural and artificial (flash); basic portrait lighting and posing; and the care, storage, and display of printed photographs as well as digital images.
Upholstery
This class will provide instruction, demonstrations, and help in repair
for boats, campers, automotive, and home furnishings. Topics include:
tying springs, cording, covering and upholstering for the beginner.
Bring your own item to be covered.
SPECIAL INTERESTS
The eBay Way - Buying and Selling
Ebay is one of the top ways to buy and sell items without having to wait
until you have accumulated enough to have a bargain sell at your home.
Also, this allows you to reach virtually anywhere from your own home.
Using ebay to buy and sell is easy and you will find some of the easy
tricks to making your buying and selling successful. You will learn how
to bid, buy and pay for items that you purchase as well as learn how to
sell items for everyone else to bid on.
Real Colors
Relating to Yourself and Others-Ever wonder why you react the way you do
to everyday things? Do you often question and ponder over multiple
solutions before giving an answer? Are you ready for anything? Do you
often need structure and find yourself making a daily schedule?
If you have often questioned some or all of these things, you are not alone. In this class, you will identify your own personality temperament along with the other 3 temperaments. You will explore ways to communicate and identify successfully all four temperaments. Whether you are looking to improve your work environment, deal with employees, indentify with your loved ones, or if you simply want to know what makes people tick, this class is for you. By identifying the “Real” you - you will become a more effective, stronger communicator, and you will be able to take your own personal relationships to a higher level.
Baby-sitters Training--(Ages 11-15)
This is the American Red Cross course created to provide students with
information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for
children in the absence of parents or adult guardians. This training will
help participants develop skills in five critical areas: leadership,
safety and safe play, basic care, first aid, and professionalism.
Biblical History
This class will involve the movement of historical biblical events and the
consequent reasons for the existent world conditions. This class is
non-denominational.
Easy as 1, 2, 3 Home Repairs That You Can Do Yourself
This course is developed to help make home repairs as easy as 1, 2, 3.
You will learn some of the basic projects that you can do yourself with
little or no help from a outside contractor. Learn how to change out lamp
switches, check for door and window air seepage and ways to fix them, and
other easy projects that you could do yourself.
Dog Obedience, Beginners, 6 months & up
An obedient dog is a part of the family. Dog obedience training will
consist of proper leash handling, heeling, sit, sit stay, down stay,
recall, and stand for examination commands.
Puppy Session - 8 To 20 weeks
Puppies will cover socialization, leash handling, and some obedience to
fit their attention spans. Please bring water and drinking dish and up to
date shot records.
World Religion
This class will discuss many different world religions such as: Taoism,
Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and American Indian.
COMPUTER WORKSHOPS
For Beginners Only
If you have little or no computer experience with the IBM or compatible
computer, this is the course for you. Topics include: terminology,
keyboard/mouse usage, components of a computer system, system commands,
diskette usage, CD ROM basics, hard disk basics, and different software
categories with hands-on demonstrations.
Word 2002
The course will give students a thorough understanding of the features of
Microsoft Word. Students will be able to create, edit, format, and print
Word documents that include outlines, tables, styles, and sections. Other
essential topics including printing, saving, and retrieving files are also
covered. Students will create a newsletter that uses columns, drawings,
and object linking and embedding. Students will learn how to use the
Workgroups features of Word, how to create Forms, Master Documents, and
Macros.
Excel 2002
This course will give students a working knowledge of electronic
spreadsheets, what they are and how to use them. Students will be able to
create and format Excel spreadsheets that include charts and multiple
worksheets. Students will be able to create and execute formulas and use
the Excel functions. Data sorting and manipulation are also covered.
Students will learn to work with the workgroup features of Excel.
Students will learn to import data into an Excel spreadsheet and will work
with the data using the data management functions of Excel.
Access 2002
This course will give students a working knowledge of databases, what they
are and how to use them. Students will learn to view data in a database
and change the view by sorting and filtering the data. Students will
create a database and learn to define forms for inputs and reports for
summarizing the data. Students will learn to create queries to view a
subset of data in the database. Students will create charts to display
data and a switchboard to manage their database application. Students
will create relational databases and learn to create forms, queries, and
reports that use relational databases. Students will learn to build
macros in Access.
PowerPoint 2002
This class will give students a working knowledge of creating
presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint. Students will learn to work with
the various PowerPoint views to create and view their presentations.
Students will learn to give slideshows using PowerPoint and use PowerPoint
to create web-based presentations. Students will learn to incorporate
Excel data, charts and animations into their presentations.
Internet/World Wide Web Basics
In this course you will learn about the opportunities available with the
Internet. Topics include: connection to the Internet, Internet Explorer
search tools, how to use the World Wide Web, and e-mail access.
Digital Media
This class is designed to teach you how to: Use a digital camera,
scanner, zip drive and CD Burner. Transfer photos from a digital camera
or scanner to floppy disk, zip disk or CD. Copy music CD’s or create your
own music CD’s. Save documents or files to CD. If you have a digital
camera and may or may not know how to operate it, bring it to class.
Photoshop Introduction
This class will introduce the new user to the basics of working with
Photoshop for retouching images and drawing. Students will be able to
use various techniques for selecting in order to edit and retouch
images. Students will be able to prepare images for including in a
website or for including in printed documents. Students will be able
to edit images using the painting tools, clone stamp and drawing
tools. Students will be able to create new images using the pen tool
and the drawing and painting tools. Students will be able to create
and edit images using layers.
Web Page Design/FrontPage
In this workshop, participants will learn basic computer knowledge and
discover how easy it is to produce a web page. Participants learn how
to set-up a website, make links to other pages and web sites, insert
graphics, tables, backgrounds and e-mail links. This workshop is
taught using FrontPage and students will learn the basics of Netscape
Communicator.
Microsoft Publisher 2002
Microsoft Publisher allows you to design documents from calendars to
business cards, newsletters to brochures. In this course we will
learn to create documents using templates and learn to add and format
text images. Students will learn design techniques as well as how to
use publisher.
Continuing Center for Lifetime Learning
A series of noncompetitive courses, designed for, people 55 years of age and older. Courses are determined by community needs and interests.
