DACC Catalog 2011-2012 Catalog - Facilities and ServicesAlternative Delivery Systems & Instructional Media Services The Instructional Media Services Department houses traditional AV equipment and provides services such as rental of films and videos, off-air recording, tape duplication, and streaming video over the internet. Studio and remote video production capabilities are available to staff and faculty as well as multimedia instruction and design. Lamination, audio tape duplication, transparency generation, and closed-circuit scheduling services are also available. The Instructional Media Services Department maintains 3 Ku/C-band and digital satellite receivers. Program guides and recording services may be scheduled in advance by any staff or faculty. Satellite programming is also accessible through closed-circuit television throughout the campus. The Danville Area Education Network (DAENET), which consists of linked Interactive videoconferencing facilities throughout the Community College District, is maintained in room 005 of the Clock Tower Center. The classroom is used for workshops and seminars, credit and non-credit courses, videoconferencing and in-service training and K-12 credit and enrichment programs. College-owned multi-site bridging facilities and access to network services are available. Audio and Videoconferencing services via the internet are also provided. For more information, call 443.8577. Instructional Media enables the College more accessible through the use of video/telecourses, internet classes and interactive video courses. Video/Telecourses are classes offered on videotape. Students watch the tapes at home at their convenience and work at their own pace with the support of an instructor. There are deadlines throughout the semester and some on campus meetings are required. The meetings are intended to assist students in their progress through the video series. Internet classes are at the students own convenience at their home computer or the campus computer lab to access class information through a series of web sites. They may interact with instructors through an electronic bulletin board, e-mail or in person during office hours. Interactive Video Courses are through completely interactive audiovisual technology, students can attend class at a remote site while the instructor conducts class from campus. Assessment Center The Assessment Center is located in Cannon Hall, Room 103. The staff administers a variety of assessments, including placement tests for new students (ACT/COMPASS), College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), Spanish and French placement tests, Windows proficiency test, Microsoft Office Specialist Certification, alternative delivery course tests, and proctored exams for students at other educational institutions. In cooperation with the College’s Corporate and Community Education division, the Assessment Center also serves as a testing site for local businesses. Bookstore The Bookstore is located on the lower level of Lincoln Hall and sells student textbooks and manuals which are chosen by the instructors, as well as supplies and novelty items. The Bookstore holds a Book Buyback during finals each semester. This gives students the opportunity to sell books that they no longer need. A small buyback is also held in January and August after classes start. Textbook information and reservation and ordering services are available online at http://www.dacc.bkstr.com. The Bookstore accepts cash, check or Visa/MC/Debit card. Career and Employment Services Center The Career & Employment Services, located in Lincoln Hall, Room 104, assists students in making career and life planning choices. Students seeking assistance in their career choice or in identifying skills which will aid them in the job search process may visit the Career & Employment Center. A variety of career information is available, including several computerized career guidance programs. Personnel are available to assist students in the career decision-making process through individual counseling and testing as well as career planning seminars. Career & Employment Services also helps students with their full-time, part-time and seasonal employment needs. Career & Employment Services personnel serve as liaisons between DACC students, faculty/staff and potential employers. The automated service is designed to help the DACC student acquire the skills necessary for successful job search as well as connect the student with potential employer contacts. Job search information and employer information are available in the Career & Employment Center. Child Development Center The Child Development Center is a licensed day care facility with a professional staff and offers a high quality pre-school program for ages 2-5. It also serves as a laboratory observation center for DACC classes in related fields. The Center is open from 6:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and is closed on college holidays. Weekly, daily, and half-day tuition rates are available. Programs at the Center, which is staffed by a director, five teachers, numerous student workers, student interns, and a cook, are intended to promote the social and educational growth of the child, to aid in the development of a sound self-concept, and to further the child’s growth in language skills. The center is open 51 weeks per year, Monday-Friday. The center is open to ANY child in the community. Child registration information is available at 217-443-8833. DACC Downtown Center The Danville Area Community College Downtown Education Center is located at 407 North Franklin Street, Danville. The DACC Downtown Education Center offers a comprehensive computer lab, including Internet access, which is open to the general public. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Courses offered at the DACC Downtown Education Center include Adult Basic Education, and GED Review. ENRICH Program ENRICH, Eliminating Negative Reinforcements - Inspiring Confidence and Hope, is based on the philosophy that education is the most fundamental building block of freedom and human rights. The purpose of the program is to work collectively with community members, agencies and educational systems to identify and serve the needs of the most vulnerable members of Vermilion County; equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to overcome barriers to access, greater opportunity and academic achievement; embrace access and inclusion and foster a climate that values diversity, individual abilities, and interest; and offer guidance, encouragement and unconditional support to those with a desire to improve their life circumstances through education and who demonstrate a willingness to invest in themselves. Information Office The Information Office, headquartered in Vermilion Hall, houses the lost and found, maintains the college switchboard, and answers general student inquiries.The Information Office may be reached by calling 443-DACC (3222). Library Services The Library supports the teaching and learning mission of DACC by providing information resources and services to students, faculty/staff, and residents of the community college district. The Library is located in the Clock Tower Center, with entrance on the main level. Renovated and expanded in 2000, the Library offers a rich and diverse collection of traditional print resources, as well as electronic resources linked from the Library web page (www.dacc.edu/library). Literally thousands of journal titles are included in the "full text" holdings of the Library's electronic database subscriptions. A variety of reference databases are also provided for campus and at-home use. DACC Library-owned materials are circulated through I-Share, the catalog of 76 primarily academic Illinois libraries. Items which the Library does not own may be requested via I-Share or other interlibrary loan services. For students and staff, DACC ID cards serve as library cards. A resident of the college district may request a courtesy library card. The Library is a member of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI), Illinois Heartland Libraries System (IHLS), I-Share, OCLC, and NILRC (a consortium of Midwestern community college libraries). Instruction in the use of library and electronic information resources is a critical component of DACC Library services. Librarians work closely with faculty to design and integrate instruction appropriate to varied curricula. A strong emphasis is placed on providing students with individual guidance and personal assistance in locating and selecting information resources. Professional reference librarians are scheduled during the majority of hours the library is open. A quiet study area is housed in the Library’s lower level, and there is also a group study room which may be reserved through the Circulation staff. A “Listening Room” and audio-visual equipment are provided for in-house use of music and visual media. Assistive equipment and software are offered for low vision students. The Library has a coin-operated copy machine and offers facsimile service. The Library also maintains 2 computer labs for students. Wi-fi is also available. The Library is open when the college is in session, but closes during semester breaks and for campus holidays.Summer hours are limited. Student Diversity Advocate The Student Diversity Advocate plans, develops, and implements programs and activities designed to increase the representation and enhance the academic success of students from diverse backgrounds including but not limited to students from diverse race, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds as well as students with disabilities. The programs and activities sponsored by the Student Diversity Advocate, ultimately, foster and support an inclusive campus environment which reflects and welcomes students from all backgrounds. Additionally, the Student Diversity Advocate is available to "advocate" or assist students in the resolution of issues or concerns a student might encounter on campus. Student Success Center The DACC Student Success Center located in Cannon Hall offers a variety of services to support student success. These services include the tutoring lab, computer lab, Academic Accommodations Office, and the TRiO Student Support Services Program. The Tutoring Lab is open Tuesday through Thursday 10AM to 3PM and to 3PM. Tutoring Services are offered free to DACC students. Students may receive tutoring in the following courses: English [098 and 099], Math [098 to Math 115], Science [GSC 100 and BIO 102] Psychology 100, and CBUS 150. In addition, students can receive tutoring in note taking, memory improvement, time management, and spelling and vocabulary. Note: Students do not receive appointments. The Office of Academic Accommodations advises and supports all programs, events and activities to ensure equal accessibility for all students and visitors, and coordinates academic auxiliary aids and other accommodations services for eligible students with disabilities. The TRiO Student Support Services is a competitive, four year grant funded by the Department of Education. TRiO is designed to increase college retention and degree completion. DACC achieved continued funding for three grant cycles spanning the last 10 years. The program is housed in Student Success Center located in Cannon Hall. The DACC TRiO Student Support Services program offers support to 160 first generation, low income or students with disabilities each year. Services include transfer visits, advisement [academic and financial aid], counseling [personal and career], tutoring, computer lab, workshops, and grant aid. Individuals can learn more about any of these services by visiting the Student Success Center located in Room 113 of Cannon Hall or by calling 217.443.8862 (TDD/TTY 217.443.8701). Veterans Multipurpose Employment Center The Veterans Multipurpose Employment Center serves the Veteran population in the areas of training and employment. The Center is designed to help Veterans successfully compete in the job market while alleviating employment-related barriers. Services provided include: career counseling and skills assessment, workshops, current listing of employment opportunities, labor market information and job search tips, resume development, online career libraries and access links, assistance in navigating the college system, training access, and other supportive services. The Veterans Center is the hub of information for other Veterans-based community services and networks. The Veterans Center is located within the Career & Employment Services Center. Parking Facilities Students are requested to park in designated areas and observe all college parking regulations. No student parking is permitted along the drives. Only handicapped students may utilize parking spaces marked by special signs. See the Student Handbook for complete parking regulations or get a copy from the Information Office in the Administration Building. Motorcycles should be parked in the appropriate designated area. Social and Recreational Facilities The Student Union Restaurant with a private dining room area is located in Lincoln Hall. Lost and Found Service The College does not assume responsibility for personal property of the student. The Information Office located in Vermilion Hall and the Security Office located in Lincoln Hall maintain a lost and found service for misplaced property. |
