Guidelines and Procedures
for Foreign Language Course Placement
Students who have taken French or Spanish in high school and who wish to
enroll in their first college-level French or Spanish class must take the
ACT Foreign Language Placement Examination. Initial course placement
is based solely upon the examination score. Instructors have the
autonomy to move a student up or down, based upon the student’s demonstrated
level of competence.
Students who have not taken French or Spanish in high school do not take
the exam. They enroll in either French 101 or Spanish 101.
Students who have successfully completed college-level French or Spanish
classes at another institution of higher education do not take the exam.
They should enroll in the appropriate class based upon what course(s) they
have completed.
Native speakers who have no academic background in the language may choose
to take the examination. If they do not take the exam, they must
enroll in either French 101 or Spanish 101. If they do take the exam,
they must enroll in the appropriate class as determined by the placement
score.
Students may not appeal the examination score.
Students may retest after six months.
Scores are valid for one year.
The Foreign Language Placement Examination is for placement only.
Students interested in taking the French or Spanish proficiency exam should
contact Division Chair, Liberal Arts.
Students wishing to schedule a Foreign Language Placement Examination should
call Christine Scudera-Ashikyan at 443-8708. Students are allowed
1 hour and 15 minutes to complete the examination.
